Encouraging your child to go to school

Did you know:
Just 17 days absence over 1 school year can related to a GCSE grade lost

Parental attitudes to education are crucial to school attendance and achievement. Research carried out in 1993 found that 44% of truanting pupils believed their parents knew they were absent. Of non-truants 48% said they were held back by their fear of their parents finding out.

10 tips for improving school attendance:

  1. Make medical or other appointments out of school time.
  2. Take an interest in your son’s or daughter's school work, ask them about their day and praise them when they do well.
  3. Tell the school when your son or daughter will be absent by calling the school on the first day of absence.
  4. Be aware of signs your son or daughter may not be going to school and discuss this with them.
  5. If you are worried or your child has problems at school contact the school to arrange a meeting.
  6. Help your son or daughter to catch up with missed work.
  7. Make sure your child understands you do not approve of them missing school.
  8. If your child makes excuses to try to get out of going to school, take time to listen to them; there might be an underlying problem.
